Company History
Dance
Anonymous, is a New York based dance company founded in September
2000. It is a community of artists from around the world, consisting of
eight dancers, a costume designer and 2 choreographers. Through its
residency program, Dance Anonymous invites composers, designers,
directors, and choreographers to expand the company’s artistic
vocabulary and enhance the resonance of the work through collaboration.
Dance Anonymous’ mission is to create vibrant and dynamic theatre that
tells a story through dance. We believe in making dance accessible and
emotionally engaging to audiences across borders and generations. Our
community outreach includes arts education and awareness programs with a
focus on children, youth and the physically challenged.
Dance Anonymous launched into the international dance community with a
sponsorship from the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus to tour
the country with their first work, entitled “Within”. After a successful
tour the company was invited back in 2002 with In the Borders of
Ignorance. In September of 2004, Dance Anonymous was commissioned by the
Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus to create their new work,
“Petra: The Awakening of Myth”. This evening-length piece was performed
in Cyprus at the prestigious “Kypria” festival with the participation of
the Cyprus State Orchestra.
Dance Anonymous has been invited to present excerpts of their work
across New York City, at venues such as Chashama Theater, Chelsea Piers,
Sal Anthony’s Atrium Theatre, WAX, Bridge for Dance, Dance Space and The
Elan Awards with honoree guest, director and choreographer Rob Marshall.
In October 2003, Dance Anonymous self produced its work In the Borders
of Ignorance, at The Duke on 42nd Street to critical acclaim.
In 2001 Dance Anonymous, in conjunction with Horeftika Vimata
Association, established the first annual summer intensive dance program
in Cyprus where acclaimed American choreographers and educators are
invited to teach young aspiring dancers a variety of techniques,
culminating in a public performance.
